How to search our online catalog from home:
Hello! You might want to look for books, movies, and other things from your home computer. Here’s how:
Go to the North Castle Library website or the North Castle library teen space. Here are the urls:
You’ll see a link to our catalog on the main page. When you click on it, this is what you’ll see:
You can search for books, movies, electronic books or music, and you can also choose subject, title, author, or keyword. For my first search, I chose "subject" using the pull down menu and then I typed in "Dalai Lama". Here's what I got:
How would you limit your search to our library? Can you figure it out? Try looking at the menus on the left hand side of the screen. Then see if you can repeat this search.
This is what the search screen looked like when I did that search. I found seven books. The first one is for young people your age.
If you want to find out if that book is on the shelf, you can click on the picture of the book or on the title to find out. You can also call us up and ask us! We’ll be happy to help. Try clicking on the picture of the book. What do you see?
This is how it looked when I did this search. A lot of our biographies were in storage. It might look different when you do it. Be sure to look carefully at the location and the shelf number. If the location is biography, that means the book's on the shelf and you can come in and get it. But what if it's not on the shelf?
If the book you want isn't on the shelf, you can click the blue button to place a hold. Once you do, this is what you'll see:
To place your hold, type in the bar code on your library card. That’s a long number that usually begins with “210”. Type it in without any spaces. In the space that asks for your pin, type in the last four numbers of your phone number.
When you place a hold, you’ll be next in line to get our book, or else, if our book doesn’t come back first, you will get a copy from another library. If our copy is in, you can also just call us up to have us put it aside for you.
There are some things you need to be careful about when you place a hold. Be sure that you use the pull down menu to tell the system where you want your book to go! If you don’t, you might not get the book. And you don’t have to worry about those menus that say “suspend date”. People use those if they are going away – on vacation, for example – and want to have a book waiting for them when they come back You can just ignore those questions if you aren’t going away.
Once you book arrives, you’ll get an automated phone call or email. You have a week to pick up your book (or movie, or CD). After a week, the item gets sent back to the library that owns it. So, if you haven’t heard anything in about a week, it’s not a bad idea to call us to ask if anything has come for you. You don’t want to go through the trouble of placing a hold just to find that the item you wanted was sent back!
It’s easy to get to our online catalog. It’s on our main website and also on the teen site.
Take your time reading the catalog screen and check out the pull-down menus. You can search all of the Westchester libraries or just our library. You can search by key words, title, author, or subject.
When you search by author or subject, you type in the last name first.
In order to get the CALL NUMBER for a book or see if it’s on the shelf in our library, click on the picture of the book or on its title. Toward the bottom of the screen that comes up, you’ll see the Dewey number (remember! Fiction and Biography are listed by name, not number. Fiction is listed by the author’s name and biographies by the subject’s. Last names first!). You’ll also see if the book is on the shelf or not.
If the book is not on the shelf, or if we don’t own a book you want, but other libraries do, you can place a hold to get it sent to Armonk.
Oh, by the way, you can also look for just kids’ books, just audiobooks, and so on. Look at the menus on the top and left hand side of the screen to see if you can figure out how to do this.
Have fun searching our catalog! If you have any questions, just call us up! The number is 273-3887.
